Aeria Morgan and her brother are considered an anomaly in their town of Avalon Valley. Not only were they born without a father, they are the first set of twins (called Dviinu) to ever exist since the Darkness hindered families from having more than one child. With so much mystery surrounding how they were conceived, the villagers among them have taken to treating them as outsiders.
While her brother Aeron is away on a trading expedition, Aeria sneaks out to enjoy a swim at a pond deep in the woods. While there she is blind-sighted by a masked man who attacks her. Luckily, she is saved by a newcomer to town, Lyam, who had followed the suspicious looking man into the forest. After the rescue, Lyam and Aeria find themselves in a blossoming relationship, despite the reservations of her mother and Aeron. Along with figuring out how to get her family to accept her beau, Aeria, Lyam, and Aeron have taken on the task of finding the man who attacked her.
I loved the writing style of this book. I found it flowed very well, and just beautifully authored. Although I found the relationship between Aeria and Lyam to become intense quite quickly, it is leveled out by the building of their feelings in their interactions after the initial attraction. Their emotions for each other are pure, passionate, and real. I love them as a couple, and Lyam is definitely one of my new book boyfriends! The relationship Aeria has with her brother Aeron I found to be really sweet, they take care of each other so well, and understand each other probably better than they understand themselves.
The lingering shadow of the Darkness around the village creates an interesting and haunting element to the book. Wouldn’t it be frightening to know death and love are so entwined that they impact each other immensely in ones life? That finding love or losing it determine whether you live or die.
I was already looking forward to the next book in the trilogy, but the twist that author Jennifer Parr injects towards the end has me impatiently waiting for it!
